In a groundbreaking find, scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope detected potential biosignatures—dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS)—in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18 b, located 124 light-years from Earth. These gases are produced on Earth only by microbial life, sparking excitement about possible extraterrestrial life. K2-18 b, a "hycean world" with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and liquid water ocean, orbits in a star’s habitable zone. Lead researcher Nikku Madhusudhan calls it a "transformational moment," though scientists urge caution, emphasizing the need for more data and theoretical studies to rule out non-biological explanations. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has strongly criticised a recent Supreme Court judgment that set a timeline for the President to act on bills sent by state governors. Calling the verdict a threat to democratic balance, Dhankhar warned against the judiciary assuming executive and legislative powers, dubbing Article 142 a "nuclear missile" against democracy. He also questioned judicial immunity and transparency in light of alleged corruption involving a Delhi High Court judge. Addressing Rajya Sabha interns, Dhankhar stressed the need for judicial accountability and a clear separation of powers, warning that unaccountable judiciary risks eroding institutional credibility and constitutional principles. Indian-origin doctor Neil K Anand has been convicted in a $2.3-million healthcare fraud case in the US. The 48-year-old Pennsylvania-based MD distributed over 20,000 oxycodone tablets through his in-house pharmacies and required patients to accept unnecessary "goody bags" to receive prescriptions. Anand also allowed medical interns to issue prescriptions and signed blank prescription sheets. He submitted false claims to Medicare and other insurers. Even during the investigation, he tried concealing $1.2 million in a family account. Convicted of multiple charges including healthcare fraud and drug distribution, Anand now faces up to 130 years in prison. (PC: India Today)

In a major engineering achievement, Indian Railways has completed Tunnel 8 on the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line in Uttarakhand, making it India’s longest railway tunnel at 14.035 km. Constructed between Devprayag and Janasu, this tunnel is part of the 125-km broad gauge project aimed at enhancing access to the Garhwal Himalayas. Executed by Larsen & Toubro using advanced tunnel boring machines (Shiv and Shakti), the project has completed over 60% of its total 213 km tunneling work. Once operational, the line will reduce travel time from Rishikesh to Karnaprayag to just two hours, boosting regional tourism, economy, and strategic infrastructure. ( PC: Times now)

In a landmark moment for marine science, researchers have captured the first-ever video of a live juvenile colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) in its natural habitat. Filmed at a depth of 2,000 feet near the South Sandwich Islands by the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s submersible SuBastian, the translucent squid measured 11.8 inches. Previously known only from dead specimens, this is the first time the elusive species has been seen alive. The discovery could offer key insights into the squid’s behavior, anatomy, and lifecycle, shedding light on one of the most mysterious creatures of the deep sea. (PC: AP)

Cristina Balan, a former Tesla engineer, has won a key legal battle in her long fight against the company. She raised safety concerns in 2014 and later filed a defamation case after Tesla accused her of embezzlement. Her case was earlier dismissed due to arbitration rules. But now, a US appeals court has ruled in her favour, saying the lower court had no right to confirm that decision. Balan hopes this will let her start a new lawsuit and face Elon Musk in court. She says she wants to clear her name for her son and get justice at last. (PC: Getty Images)

A Cambridge University team has found the strongest evidence so far of potential life beyond Earth on the distant exoplanet K2-18b, 124 light-years away. Using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, researchers detected chemical signatures of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) and dimethyl disulphide (DMDS)—molecules on Earth linked to marine life. Lead scientist Prof. Nikku Madhusudhan emphasizes the findings are promising but not conclusive, as more data is needed to rule out non-biological sources. If confirmed, this discovery could revolutionize the search for extraterrestrial life and reshape humanity’s understanding of its place in the universe. (PC: Cambridge University)
