A severe heatwave has gripped Odisha, resulting in at least 54 suspected heatstroke deaths over the past 48 hours. The state government has confirmed nine deaths so far. Western Odisha districts, including Balangir, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sonepur, have been the worst affected. A high-level meeting was held to ensure implementation of heatwave advisories and precautionary measures. The IMD predicts continued heatwave conditions in western Odisha and hot and humid weather in coastal and interior districts. The government has issued instructions to District Collectors to take necessary measures to mitigate the effects of the heatwave.
