The India Meteorological Department (IMD) revealed that Delhi's record-breaking temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius on May 29 was due to a sensor malfunction at the Mungeshpur weather station. The automatic weather station (AWS) reported temperatures 3 degrees higher than standard instruments. An expert committee confirmed the anomaly, noting Mungeshpur's reading surpassed Delhi's previous record. Other observatories recorded temperatures below 50 degrees. The IMD assured corrective measures to prevent such errors, emphasizing the accuracy of other AWS stations in the city. Manual observatories, like Safdarjung, recorded a maximum of 46.8 degrees Celsius on the same day.
