One in Five Heatwave Deaths Worldwide Occur in India

A new study reveals that heatwaves are associated with over 1.53 lakh deaths globally each year. India accounts for the largest share, with over 20% of these deaths, followed by China and Russia. The research, led by Monash University, analyzed data from 1990 to 2020 and found that heatwave-related deaths make up about 1% of total global deaths. Asia and Europe are the most affected regions, with nearly half of the excess deaths occurring in Asia and over 30% in Europe.
