India has surpassed Japan to become the world's third-largest solar power generator in 2023, according to a report by Ember, a global energy think tank. Solar energy accounted for 5.8% of India's electricity generation last year, up from 9th position in 2015. Globally, solar power produced a record 5.5% of electricity in 2023, maintaining its status as the fastest-growing electricity source for the 19th consecutive year. India saw the world's fourth-largest increase in solar generation in 2023, with the top four countries accounting for 75% of global growth.
