The intense heatwave affecting eastern and southern peninsular India is expected to subside soon, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Eastern regions can expect relief by today, while southern states will have to wait another day. A wet spell with thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely till May 10. Temperatures have been above 40°C since last month, with Kolkata recording 43°C on April 30, its highest in 50 years. Meanwhile, western India, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, and western Madhya Pradesh, will experience a fresh heatwave spell in the next five days.
