Five people have died in Uttarakhand's raging forest fires, including a 65-year-old woman who succumbed to burn injuries on Sunday. Savitri Devi was trying to douse a fire that reached her farm in Thalpi village. Four people have been booked for starting fires in the Gangolihat forest range. Meanwhile, meteorologists predict rain from May 7-8, intensifying from May 11, which may help extinguish the fires. The wildfires have destroyed 1,145 hectares of forests in 910 incidents since November 1, 2023. The rain brings hope to contain the devastating fires that have ravaged the state's green cover. The downpour is expected to start in the Kumaon region from May 7 and in the Garhwal region from May 8.
