55-year-old man Dharmesh Lakhani, owner of Bobby's restaurant in Leicester was arrested by Leicester Police on Monday when he intervened to stop police harrassing the head priest of the Shivalaya Mandir on Belgrave Road. Video on social media allegedly showed a clash between an Indian-origin crowd and a cop. The man was released pending more inquiries. The incident occurred during an impromptu procession after an authorized festival. Police engaged the crowd to get details on the organizer, prompting the arrest. Authorities continue engaging the community to ensure safe celebrations and encourage informing the council to provide proper support. The incident has left Hindus feeling deeply distressed as they were not able to celebrate their festival. The murtis, which had been imported from India, were being wheeled along the pavement by a small group, when police showed up and claimed it was an "unplanned procession."
