The United States announced its intention to closely scrutinize the implementation of India's Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), expressing concerns over its potential impact on religious freedom. The CAA, aimed at expediting citizenship for persecuted migrants, has faced criticism for excluding Muslims. Indian officials maintain that the law is meant to assist minorities facing persecution, and Muslims are eligible for citizenship under existing laws. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of religious freedom and equal treatment under the law. The Indian government reiterated that the CAA does not affect Indian Muslims' citizenship rights.
