The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed economist Poonam Gupta as its new Deputy Governor, making her the first woman in over a decade to hold the post. Gupta, who previously led the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), has nearly 20 years of experience at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She is expected to join the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) as it eases interest rates under new RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra.
