A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Tonga, triggering a tsunami warning for the Pacific island nation, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which hit about 100 kilometers northeast of the main island, Tongatapu, occurred at a depth of 10 km. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center cautioned that hazardous waves could impact coastlines within 300 km of the epicenter. No immediate reports of damage have surfaced.
