The death toll in the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar rose to 1,644, the country’s ruling military said on Saturday, adding that the numbers may rise as more bodies are being pulled from the rubble of the buildings that collapsed on Friday. The government had, hours earlier, announced 1,002 total fatalities. The number of those injured has now increased to 3,408, while there are 139 people who are still missing. The epicenter near Mandalay caused widespread destruction, including collapsed buildings and damaged infrastructure. Rescue operations are ongoing, with international aid arriving from countries like India, China, and Russia. India's 'Operation Brahma' has dispatched relief materials and 80 National Disaster Response Force personnel to assist in search and rescue efforts. The disaster exacerbates Myanmar's existing humanitarian challenges amid internal conflicts. The international community is urged to provide coordinated support to aid recovery and relief efforts.
