Sunita Williams Spent Nine Months at ISS Instead of a Week Due to Boeing Starliner’s Propulsion Failure

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner in June 2024 for its first crewed mission, initially planned to last just over a week. However, a critical propulsion system malfunction prevented the spacecraft from making a safe return trip. NASA deemed the Starliner unsafe for re-entry, leaving Williams and Wilmore stationed at the International Space Station (ISS) for nine months while awaiting a replacement spacecraft. After months of troubleshooting, the astronauts finally returned to Earth aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, marking the end of an unexpectedly extended mission in space.
