Renowned Indian scholar and literary critic Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak has been awarded the 2025 Holberg Prize, one of the most prestigious international accolades in the humanities and social sciences. The prize, which includes a monetary award of approximately €515,000, will be presented by Norway's Crown Prince Haakon at a ceremony on June 5. Born in Kolkata in 1942, Spivak is a University Professor at Columbia University and a founding member of its Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. Her seminal 1988 essay, "Can the Subaltern Speak?", has significantly influenced postcolonial studies by highlighting how marginalized voices are often suppressed within global capitalism. Throughout her career, Spivak has received numerous honors, including the Padma Bhushan in 2013 and the Kyoto Prize in Art and Philosophy in 2012.
