According to the World Air Quality Report 2024 by IQAir, 13 of the world's 20 most polluted cities are in India, with Byrnihat in Assam leading the list. Delhi remains the most polluted capital globally, maintaining an annual average PM2.5 concentration of 91.6 µg/m³, nearly unchanged from 92.7 µg/m³ in 2023. India's national PM2.5 average declined by 7% to 50.6 µg/m³ in 2024, ranking it as the fifth most polluted country, down from third in 2023. Notably, 35% of Indian cities reported annual PM2.5 levels exceeding ten times the WHO's safe limit of 5 µg/m³. Air pollution poses a significant health risk in India, reducing life expectancy by an estimated 5.2 years.
