On March 7, 2025, the banned militant group Hizb ut-Tahrir organized a 'March for Khilafah' in Dhaka, Bangladesh, advocating for the establishment of an Islamic caliphate. The procession commenced from the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque following Friday prayers, with participants chanting "Khilafat, Khilafat." As the march progressed towards Bijoynagar, police intervened, leading to clashes. Law enforcement deployed tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the crowd, resulting in temporary scattering of demonstrators. However, protesters regrouped and retaliated by hurling bricks and stones at officers, escalating the confrontation. Several Hizb ut-Tahrir members were arrested during the unrest. The group has been banned in Bangladesh since 2009 for posing a threat to national security.
