Thomas Gabriel Pereira, a 47-year-old autorickshaw driver from Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram, was fatally shot by Jordanian border guards on February 10 while attempting to cross into Israel illegally. Misled by an agency promising Israeli work visas, Pereira and three others traveled to Jordan on tourist visas. Their families lost contact after February 9. Pereira's relative, Edison, sustained leg injuries and was deported after medical treatment; the other two remain imprisoned in Jordan. The family seeks assistance from Norka Roots to repatriate Pereira's body. This incident highlights the pressing issue of visa fraud and illegal recruitment in Kerala.
