Latvia’s ‘Flow’ Wins Best Animated Feature, Iran’s ‘In the Shadow of the Cypress’ Takes Animated Short Film at Oscars 2025

Latvian film Flow made history by winning Best Animated Feature at the Oscars 2025, beating Inside Out 2, The Wild Robot, Memoir of a Snail, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. Directed by Gints Zilbalodis, the film follows a group of animals navigating a world without humans as rising waters threaten their survival. The filmmakers expressed pride in Latvia’s first Oscar nomination and win, saying, “We must all overcome our differences and work together.”   Meanwhile, Iranian filmmakers Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani won Best Animated Short Film for In the Shadow of the Cypress. The duo arrived in the U.S. just hours before the ceremony, quickly changing into formal attire in a public restroom. Their win marks a significant achievement for Iranian cinema.
