On February 23, 2025, American Airlines Flight AA292 from New York to New Delhi was diverted to Rome following a bomb threat received via email. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, was over the Caspian Sea when the threat was reported. Italian Air Force fighter jets escorted the aircraft to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, where it landed safely at 5:30 PM local time. All passengers disembarked without incident, and airport operations remained unaffected. The bomb threat was later deemed non-credible. Passengers, including Indian-origin traveler Lucky Chawla, reported being stranded in Rome, with some unable to retrieve their checked luggage. American Airlines is collaborating with local authorities and assisting affected passengers.
