A German skier escaped death after being buried by an avalanche at Mont Blanc on January 29. As he slid down the mountain, a sudden avalanche hit him. He deployed an emergency airbag, which kept him above the snow. He tumbled 300 metres and was nearly thrown off a cliff. A rescue team found him in 20 minutes. He was unconscious and had a broken leg and fractured ribs. A witness filmed the terrifying moment. He was airlifted to a hospital. On the same day, five skiers died in another avalanche in the French Alps.
