India And China Agree On Disengagement, Border Patrolling Before BRICS Summit In Russia

India and China have agreed to disengage along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the border areas, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced on Monday. This decision comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia for the BRICS summit. Tensions have remained high between the nuclear-armed neighbors since a 2020 clash left 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead. Diplomatic and military negotiations over recent weeks led to this resolution, paving the way for smoother border relations. Modi may also meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the summit’s sidelines.
