The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reported to the Supreme Court that operatives of the banned Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), based in Canada, were behind the murder of Balwinder Singh Sandhu, a Shaurya Chakra awardee, in Punjab in 2020. Sandhu was shot dead outside his home in Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran district, in October 2020. He received the Shaurya Chakra for his efforts against militancy in Punjab during the 1990s. This development comes amid strained relations between Canada and India, which have escalated following the investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
