Japan issued its highest "special warning" for Typhoon Shanshan, expected to hit Kyushu with violent winds and storm surges. Authorities advised 56,000 people to evacuate from southern Kyushu, where up to 1,100 mm (43 inches) of rain is predicted. The typhoon, with gusts reaching 252 km/h (157 mph), has already led to Toyota suspending production at all 14 of its factories. A landslide in Aichi prefecture left two people missing. With severe impacts on transportation, including flight cancellations affecting 25,000 people, the typhoon poses a major disaster risk.
