Earth's 13-month streak of record heat has ended, with July 2024 slightly cooler than the previous July. From June 2023 to June 2024, air and ocean temperatures were a quarter of a degree Celsius higher than previous records, driven by climate change and the El Niño phenomenon. Although temperatures are trending back to neutral due to the waning El Niño, the underlying global warming trend persists. Scientists warn that without accelerated action against fossil fuel use, the world may soon surpass 1.5°C of warming, a critical threshold outlined in the Paris Agreement.
