I am appalled and concerned about the information shared regarding the 1969 ‘Chipati’ study using South Asian women from Coventry.

My foremost concern is for the women and the families of those who were experimented on in this study. pic.twitter.com/0FwMoYvt9z

UK Labour MP Taiwo Owatemi has called for a statutory inquiry into a 1960s medical study where Indian-origin women in Coventry were unknowingly given radioactive chapatis to test iron deficiency treatments. Owatemi expressed deep concern for the impacted women and families, demanding answers on how this happened and support for victims to share their stories. The study gave chapatis with an iron isotope to 21 South Asian women patients of a GP. An earlier independent inquiry was conducted after the study emerged in 1995, but recommendations to identify participants were not followed up.
