Indian-origin Shivani Raja, 29, took her oath as a UK MP on the Bhagavad Gita. Raja secured a historic victory for the Conservative Party in Leicester East, ending Labour’s 37-year hold. She defeated Rajesh Agrawal with 14,526 votes. In a tweet, Raja expressed pride in swearing allegiance to King Charles on the Gita. This election also saw 27 other Indian-origin MPs elected. Labour Party won the UK general election with 412 seats, making Keir Starmer the new Prime Minister. Former PM Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives won just 121 seats.
