A study published in The Lancet Planetary Health journal reveals that air pollution in 10 major Indian cities is linked to over 7% of daily deaths. PM2.5 concentrations exceeded WHO's safe limits on 99.8% of days, putting millions at risk. Delhi tops the list, with 11.5% of total deaths (around 12,000 annually) attributed to air pollution. Vehicular and industrial emissions are main culprits. Researchers warn that daily exposure to PM2.5 pollution increases death risk, with locally generated pollution likely causing fatalities. The study analyzed data from Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Shimla, and Varanasi.
