The incident occurred as devotees were leaving a 'satsang' led by Bhole Baba in Phulrai village. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow and assured full support to the state. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced financial aid for the victims' families and medical assistance for the injured. Rescue operations by NDRF and SDRF teams are underway at the site, where bodies were found piled up due to suffocation in the rush.
