The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed a rule to increase fees for extending work visas, effective July 8. The move will impact Indian professionals, who are the largest recipients of H-1B visas. The proposal includes a $4,000 fee for H-1B visa extensions and $4,500 for L-1 visa extensions. This aims to fund national security programs. Indians secured 77% of the 320,000 approved H-1B visas in 2022. The hike is expected to affect Indian IT companies that rely on H-1B visas to send software engineers to the US. The proposal is part of the 9/11 Response and Biometric Entry-Exit Fee established in 2016.
