The Centre has approved the Uttarakhand government’s proposal to rename two tehsils: Joshimath in Chamoli district will be called Jyotirmath, and Kosiyakutoli in Nainital district will be renamed Pargana Shri Kainchi Dham. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the renaming last year, fulfilling a long-standing local demand. Residents cited the historical and spiritual significance of Joshimath, originally known as Jyotirmath after Adi Guru Shankaracharya performed penance there in the 8th century and attained enlightenment. The renaming aims to restore and honor this heritage.
