Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh's convoy was ambushed by armed militants in Kangpokpi district while en route to tension-stricken Jiribam from Imphal. One security personnel sustained injuries in the attack on Monday morning along National Highway-37. The Chief Minister intended to visit Jiribam the following day amidst unrest sparked by the recent killing of a 59-year-old farmer, Soibam Saratkumar Singh. The incident exacerbated ethnic tensions, prompting evacuations and setting off protests demanding the return of confiscated firearms. Jiribam, a diverse community comprising Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and others, had previously been relatively untouched by such conflicts.
