President Donald Trump has paused enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), a law restricting U.S. companies from bribing foreign officials. Trump, critical of the FCPA, believes it harms American business interests. This move follows accusations from the Biden administration against India's Adani Group for allegedly bribing officials, which the group denies. Trump’s executive order directs a review of ongoing FCPA cases. Following the pause, Adani stocks surged. U.S. Congress members also criticized the Biden administration’s pursuit, claiming it jeopardized U.S.-India relations without national security justification.

Ahead of Prime Minister Modi's US visit, Mumbai Police received a terror threat on February 11, warning of a potential attack on his aircraft. The call, made to the police control room, prompted immediate investigation. The suspect, arrested from Chembur, is reportedly mentally ill. This is not the first such threat; similar warnings were received last December, including claims of a bomb plot involving alleged ISI agents. Authorities continue to investigate and ensure safety measures for the prime minister's travel. PM Modi is currently on a four-day official visit to France and the US.

Six U.S. Congressmen have urged Attorney General Merrick Garland to reconsider the indictment of Adani Group executives, criticizing the Department of Justice's (DOJ) decision. In a letter, they wrote, “Instead of deferring the case to the appropriate Indian authorities, the Biden DOJ decided to push forward and indict [Adani Group]’s executives without any real injury to U.S. interests being present.” The DOJ has charged Adani executives with financial misconduct, but the Congressmen argue that India's legal system should handle the matter. The case has sparked diplomatic concerns, with India closely monitoring developments. The DOJ has not responded to the letter.

India plans to counter President Trump’s 25% tariff threat on steel and aluminum imports by citing recent duty reductions. Ahead of PM Modi's meeting with Trump, India aims to highlight its tariff cuts, including those for bikes like Harley Davidson, and the overall reduction of average duties to 10.6%. This is seen as a response to concerns about high tariffs. Despite the tariff threat, India's exports of steel and aluminum to the US remain unlikely to face significant disruptions. India hopes its strategic relationship with the US will help avoid severe trade impacts.
